Sproat Lake Paddle Report - May 31, 2022

The day started cool and wet, as we all drove off from Parksville, not knowing whether things were going to improve.

It was great to have a good turnout.

20 paddlers took part in 14 kayaks and 2 canoes

The Pre-Trip Meeting

After our pre-paddle briefing, we set out eastwards to look at the Petroglyphs at K’Aka’Win. These are a very important example of First Nation prehistoric art, estimated to be around 3000 years old.

We then paddled down, but not close to, the beginning of the Somass River, taking care not to let any of the kayaks get caught in the current.

Our paddle then took us along the south shore of the lake, past the Houseboat rental dock and past many beautiful houses and docks.

We paddled down the south shore towards Faber Point, where we crossed over to the peninsula, and then around and across to the north shore,

where we arrived at the Sproat Lake Landing Resort dock. Fortunately we were granted permission to land there, where we had lunch. A few of the paddlers made use of the washroom at Della’s Coffee Shop.

By this time the weather had improved significantly, and we were peeling off layers.

We had a relaxed paddle back to the beach, passing more beautiful houses, the Mars Water Bomber area,

and many of us were able to observe some large turtles on the logs and in the water

just before arriving back at the beach.

The paddle was enjoyed by all!

We paddled just over 11 km in approximately 3 hours of paddling.
