Horne Lake Paddle - May 30, 2023

Eighteen paddlers gathered at Horne Lake to enjoy a couple of hours of kayaking on this beautiful spring day.

Winds were light as we started out and on the whole remained light for most of the excursion. We paddled clockwise from the boat launch, past many cabins,

and after an hour reached our lunch spot.

The gravely beach was large for us to spread out and enjoy lunch under many old Arbutus Trees. A very pretty spot and apparently is government owned and is under the Ministry of Fisheries.

Off to the left of the beach is a wooden tower structure that apparently controls the level of the Qualicum River that flows into/out of Horne Lake. A bonus find was an outhouse nearby, so a popular spot for those who needed relief.

After lunch, we paddled across the lake past an island, and followed the shoreline until we reached Turtle Rock. The lake water is very high this spring, and many beach trees were under water, as we paddled past on our way back to the boat launch.

5 paddlers took a shorter route and headed for the beach, while the remainder continued to paddle another 2 km along the shoreline, across the lake where campers were parked and then ended up at the boat launch.

After putting the kayaks back on the cars, several stopped by the little store at the entrance to the park and enjoyed an ice cream treat to end the day. We picked the right time of day to paddle as when we were packing up, the wind picked up and white caps were visible across the lake. A good day was had by all.

Jim S, figured we had paddled 12 kms in total. Thanks everyone for a great paddle.
