June 3 - Royston Wrecks Report

Royston Paddle June 3

Linda Watson led 18 paddlers on a tour of the Wrecks of Royston. Before the trip started Linda gave a brief history of the 15 ships which formed a breakwater for the Comox Logging Company’s operations. We then paddled a short distance to view the wrecks up close.

The next part of the trips (3 km) was spent paddling across Comox Harbour

to the Comox Marina. The waters were calm and we paddled under sunny skies and light winds. We stopped for a few minutes at the Boat Launch before paddling past the many boats tied to the docks before leaving the Harbour. Our next destination was the sandy beaches at Goose Spit. The crossing of 1 km took less that 30 minutes and we stopped for lunch. We enjoyed the amazing views of the mountains including Comox Glacier and Mt Washington.

We then paddled back to Royston with a slight tail wind aiding our journey.

Fortunately, the tide was quite high so we didn’t have to walk our kayaks very far back to our vehicles. Most of us got together at the Royston Roasting Company for after paddle refreshments.

We paddled a total of 7 kilometres and we were off the water by 1:30.
